In Hong Kong, acne has long been a troubling issue for many teenagers. Although there are various treatment options available on the market, today we will introduce three new types of acne medications to help everyone understand their features and efficacy, particularly in effectively preventing the formation of acne scars, so that the worries of adolescence no longer become a source of pain.

The first new medication is “Winlevi,” a topical cream specifically designed to combat male hormones, which has been approved by the U.S. FDA. The root causes of acne often trace back to abnormal keratin metabolism, excessive sebum production, bacterial infections, and hormonal influences, especially the male hormone DHT. DHT activates the sebaceous glands, leading to increased oil secretion and inflammatory responses. By inhibiting the binding of DHT to its receptors, “Winlevi” effectively reduces oil production and inflammation.

Notably, this medication has relatively low side effects because it quickly metabolizes into an inactive form after acting on the skin, without entering the bloodstream to cause systemic effects. Therefore, it is suitable for users aged 12 and older, and in cases of particularly severe conditions, it may be considered under a doctor’s guidance.

Next, we have another newly launched medication called “Epiduo-Forte.” This medication combines the third-generation retinoid “Adapalene” with benzoyl peroxide (BPO), with Adapalene at the highest concentration of 0.3% among topical retinoids. This combination provides a stronger treatment effect for severe acne. Clinical experience shows that users often only experience mild peeling, making this medication relatively well-tolerated. Patients should adjust their choice of medication based on their own conditions and needs.

Finally, the third medication we would like to introduce is “Aklief,” whose generic name is Trifarotene. This is a new fourth-generation retinoid product characterized by stronger specificity and fewer side effects. It was approved by the FDA in 2019 and has officially launched in Hong Kong. This medication is significantly more potent than third-generation retinoids, requiring only a concentration of 0.005%. In addition to treating facial acne, it can also target back acne.

The introduction of these three new medications undoubtedly brings new hope for acne treatment. With advancements in technology, the medical community’s understanding of acne is continually deepening, paving the way for more personalized and effective treatment options in the future. For young people facing acne, choosing the right treatment methods and medications that suit their needs is crucial.
