Today, weight loss has become a common topic, especially in urban areas like Hong Kong. Each of us wishes to have a healthy body; however, when it comes to fats, we often hold negative views. But did you know that fats actually come in different types and serve various functions? Let’s delve into the knowledge of fats today.

Fats can be mainly categorized into three types: white fat, brown fat, and beige fat. White fat is the type we dislike the most, as its primary function is to store energy. These fat cells contain a large amount of oil, which is used to store calories for the body to utilize when needed. In contrast, brown fat is a unique type of fat that exists in a relatively low proportion in our bodies but has the ability to burn fat and generate heat, helping to maintain body temperature. Studies show that adults have about 40 to 50 grams of brown fat, which, although it accounts for less than 0.1% of body weight, can burn 10% to 20% of the daily basal metabolic rate—making it a small helper worth paying attention to.

As for beige fat, it lies between white and brown fat and is responsible for further promoting fat burning. Interestingly, brown fat is generally more vigorous in infants, as it helps newborns generate heat in cold environments. However, as we age, the amount of brown fat gradually decreases, and in adults, it is primarily concentrated around the shoulders and collarbone.

So, how can we enhance our brown and beige fats? Exercise is an effective method—it helps to stimulate the secretion of adrenaline, promoting the conversion of white fat to beige fat. Another method is through low-temperature stimulation; for instance, in a cold environment, the body will shiver, secreting specific enzymes that further promote the conversion and burning of fat.

In terms of obesity types, we can categorize them into four types: evenly distributed fat, upper body concentrated male obesity, lower body concentrated female obesity, and visceral fat-type obesity. Understanding your own fat distribution pattern can help you target fat loss more effectively.

When it comes to fat loss, exercise is undoubtedly the most common means. However, research shows that men usually lose fat from the abdomen first, while women tend to slim down more easily in the arms and torso. Moreover, sometimes, even with consistent exercise, it can still be difficult to lose fat around the waist. In such cases, seeking specialized treatment methods becomes a good option, such as using HIFU or radiofrequency devices for local fat melting treatments or adopting cryolipolysis techniques, which can effectively help reduce fat in specific areas.

In summary, understanding fats can help us manage our weight more healthily and make wiser decisions in our daily lives. I hope that after reading this article, everyone can gain a better understanding of the fats in their bodies and make appropriate adjustments! If everyone can find suitable healthy habits, our quality of life will greatly improve.
