Could facial redness be rosacea?

Facial redness has multiple possible causes

Rosacea can involve central facial redness, flushing, visible vessels, spots or eye symptoms, but these features are not specific to rosacea. Similar symptoms can occur with other skin or medical conditions, so they should not be used to decide the cause yourself.

Skin Redness

Facial redness is common in rosacea, but a number of other conditions can have overlapping features. The following examples describe possibilities rather than a way to identify a condition yourself:

Lupus can affect the skin and other organs, and some forms may produce facial redness. Its appearance and accompanying symptoms vary, so medical assessment is required rather than comparison with a photograph or checklist.

Flushing can also occur around menopause or with several less common medical conditions. Redness outside the central face or symptoms elsewhere in the body may be relevant, but these features cannot establish the cause without clinical assessment.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis can cause redness with scaling or dryness, often around oilier areas of the face or scalp. These features can overlap with other conditions and require assessment when the cause is uncertain.

Visible Fine Blood Vessels

Telangiectasia means fine blood vessels that can be seen through the skin. It can occur with sun-related skin change and other conditions. Its significance depends on the wider pattern of symptoms and should not be interpreted alone.

Papules and Pustules

Papules and pustules can occur with acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis or reactions to inappropriate topical medicine use. Their location and appearance alone are not enough to identify the cause.
